The German journalist Othmara Glas has lived in Almaty, Kazakhstan, since 2017. But even before then, she was already looking eastward: a bachelor's degree in political science was followed by a period of study in Estonia and Georgia. Having spent two years as an editor for the Deutsche Allgemeine Zeitung in Kazakhstan, she now works as a freelance journalist, reporting among others for the daily Frankfurter Rundschau and the bimonthly news magazine New Eastern Europe. She also co-produces the regular podcast "Shashlyk Mashlyk" devoted to Central Asia.
