The Difficult Quest for Quality in Journalism

Concepts of quality management in journalism have recently gained attention in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. This article offers an overview of the major defaults in journalism, exploring economic and sociological reasons why efforts to secure and to improve quality are arriving late in the world of mass media. Concepts for quality management are presented, emphasizing the specific role of journalism infrastructures in the process of quality improvement.  Criteria for quality is discussed along with four basic approaches to quality measurement in journalism.
