Mission

The European Journalism Observatory (EJO)

Entrenched in a world of rapid innovation, today’s media industry is forced to adapt.  Perpetually challenged by technological advancement, political transformation, shifting economic conditions and fickle publics, journalism faces a thorough metamorphosis.

Globalization and the political and economic integration of  Europe play roles in the evolving media landscape, yet little attention is devoted to developments in the journalistic practices of neighbor countries. Language barriers increase difficulties in perceiving events occuring outside the Anglo-Saxon world.

The Project

By analyzing research and trends in the media industry, the European Journalism Observatory (EJO) aims to build bridges among  journalism cultures in Europe and the U.S., contributing to the improvement of quality journalism. EJO’s work is designed to aid media managers, analysts, editors and journalists, thus reducing the gap between newsrooms and communications research.

The European Journalism Observatory was established in the spring of 2004 as a non-profit based at the Università della Svizzera italiana with the support of the Fondazione per il Corriere del Ticino. Our work is characterized by:

Professionalism in journalism: Knowledge of the industry and practical journalistic experience enable EJO researchers to identify topics relevant to professionals working in newsrooms and in the media industry.

Transnational perspective: By focusing on the comparative analysis of developments in European nations and the U.S.,  industry trends are identified at an early stage.

Research transfer: Along with research lead by other relevant institutions, EJO’s studies are presented in an intelligent, readable manner.

Academic credibility: Studies are conducted by international journalists whose independence is guaranteed by the Università della Svizzera italiana.

Areas of Activity

Proprietary research projects: The EJO conducts research on trends and developments in European nations and the U.S. with a particular focus on innovation and optimal practices.

Publication of journalistic articles and analyses
: Articles and research papers appearing on EJO Web sites are first published in major newspapers, journalism magazines and academic journals.

Web site: The publications of EJO researchers and partners can be accessed on the EJO website (http://en.ejo.ch/) in Italian, German, Polish and English. Analyses are only translated if they are considered of relevance for the language area in question.

Conferences and workshops: Public events and workshops provide opportunities for an international exchange of ideas between researchers and media practitioners.
