Merging Media Converging Newsrooms

The latest contribution to EJO’s book collection documents a March 2008 workshop of the same title. Organized by the MAZ Die Schweizer Journalistenschule and the European Journalism Observatory, researchers, editors and journalists assembled in Lucerne, Switzerland, to discuss the future of newsrooms as well as print and online news media in the era of digital technologies and economic crises.

Divided into four segments, Merging Media, Converging Newsrooms begins with an overview of “state of the art” convergence procedures in U.S. and European newsrooms. It then offers a closer look at the process as it occurs across various European countries, highlighting cultural differences from newsroom to newsroom, country to country. The third segment focuses on media mergers, discussing potential synergies and their impact on journalistic quality. Concluding with the analysis of consequences, Merging Media, Converging Newsrooms illuminates ways in which changes in the media and newsroom may alter the journalistic profession.
